Installing a Shower Head
Updating an old shower head is as simple as unscrewing the old, threading the new.
Start by unscrewing the old head from the water supply. Shower heads can be unscrewed by hand, but if its stuck on tight , use a pair of channel lock pliers to unscrew it. Wrapping the pliers with tape will protect the finish of your new shower head.
Turn slowly and hold the water supply line while you are unscrewing the shower head.
Wrap the threads on your new shower head with teflon tape, you only need to go around once. This will ensure that you won’t have any leaks.
Screw your new shower head back on the same way
Cleaning a Shower head
Shower heads will start to clog with hard water deposits over time. How quickly depends on how hard the water is where you live. In most case, you can easily remove the hard-water and mineral deposits that build up in a shower head using vinegar in a plastic bag:
Pour warm vinegar into a gallon zip lock plastic bag with your shower head.
Soak the shower head for at least 24 hours.
Remove and discard the vinegar.
Remove the loosened deposits with a soft brush. An old toothbrush is great for this.
Clean the spray holes in the shower head with a fine needle.
Run hot water through the shower head for several minutes.
Cleaning a shower head with vinegar in most cases will work fine. Some areas have extra Iron minerals in the water that are not as easily removed with just vinegar.
There are other products sold that will remove these harder deposits. One is CLR. It is available in most hardware stores.
CLR is also excellent for cleaning mineral deposits from shower doors.
